High note as Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs communities rally

Local folk are rallying round to help those in need during the coronavirus pandemic.

There have been so many heart-warming tales of
random acts of kindness
carried out by people in the community.

Take Kirkintilloch paper boy Jack Kennedy, who has been going above and beyond for his customers during the Covid-19 crisis.

Pensioners Andy and Eustice, who live at Border Way, got in touch with the Herald to praise the local teenager for his kindness as they self-isolate to keep safe.

In an email, Andy said: “I want to let you know about our local paper delivery boy, Jack. This week, the Kirkintilloch Herald was posted through our door, wrapped in plastic... with two cream eggs inside!

“Attached was a note saying ‘don’t need to pay, if you need anything just call my number.’

“We both feel we have to tell people how kind Jack has been. He’s a quiet young lad and this has to be a commendation for Jack, a young school lad. His parents must be proud of him, having an attitude like this.”

Jack’s mum Linda said: “We very much appreciate Jack’s customers lovely message through the Herald.

“He has been delivering the papers for over four years and so has a good relationship with his customers.”

On another high note, Bishopbriggs piper Grant Mac
Leod brought some cheer to care home residents before last week’s lockdown came into effect.

He was inundated with requests after he offered to perform some tunes outside local care homes.

Grant said: “My partner worked in a care home and we thought it would be good to do a tune for those who were isolated.

“I visited eight care homes in two days, in the East Dunbartonshire area, as well as three private homes to play happy birthday for isolated residents.”

Grant is well known in the area as the “Munro Bagpiper”, performing tunes from Scotland’s highest mountains. Find out more about him at www.munrobagpiper.com.

A special Facebook site has also been set up – East Dunbartonshire Community Together – to reach out to people in need. In the space of days, it has amassed more than 4,000 members.

Local woman Ashley Hampsey has also set up a fundraising page to help East Dunbartonshire Foodbank.
