Life's a drag for talented Kirkintilloch queen Shego

Lawrence, from Glasgow, triumphed last month in the final of the hugely successful “RuPaul's Drag Race UK” screened on BBCTV.

Now Shego Sinner – aka Lewis Kelly – wants Kirkintilloch to get a slice of drag action.

Shego, who has shared a stage with Lawrence on the local drag stage, told the Herald she got into drag four years ago by watching the original American version of Ru Paul’s Drag Race.

Shego said: “I never realised UK drag queens were to a similar standard. as I always imagined British drag to be the likes of Lily Savage.

"Then about two years ago, I attended one of the Drag Race tours where I saw some local performers as support acts and was absolutely blown away by the level of talent.

"From then on, I decided that’s what I wanted to do.”

It wasn’t long before Shego started doing regular guests spots at the weekly drag shows in Glasgow such as Trigger and has performed in the popular Rabbit Hole nightclub in Edinburgh and Bingo Wigs drag show in Dundee.

Shego said: “Before the covid pandemic struck, the Kirkintilloch drag scene hosted a drag show in the Rangers Club every four months which always sold out super quick which demonstrates there is definitely a market and a demand for more local shows.

"The Kirkintilloch show was called Audrey’s Audities and consisted of seven local drag queens - Paige Turner, Sarah Problem, Brooke Mark and myself Shego Sinner who are all from Kirkintilloch.

"We also had Ann Phetamine, Paris Ettamol and the winner of Rupaul’s drag race UK Lawrence Chaney from Glasgow.

"We would also have two special guests per show usually from around Scotland such as Dundee or Edinburgh.

“We decided to venture out for our last show and hosted it at Twechar Miners clubs which also sold out really quickly.”

she added: “My plans for more shows in East Dunbartonshire would be to hopefully run a weekly night show as well as monthly Drag Bingo Show which are always massive success.

"There is definitely a demand for local drag shows within the local area as not everyone feels comfortable to venture out into Glasgow.”
