Milngavie festival is called off

The hugely popular Milngavie Week has been cancelled this summer – but organisers hope the community can come
together later in the year.

Up to 50 activities and events had been planned for the week-long festival from June 6-13 this year.

However, joint co-ordinators Wilson and Ruth Blakey told the Herald this week that after extensive consultation on the current national health crisis, it was clear it would not be able to go ahead.

Wilson said: “Milngavie Week is all about bringing people together in social gatherings, with volunteers putting on around 50 events in one week in June.

“But just to confirm what has become increasingly obvious in the course of the last two weeks – our Milngavie Week events and activities have to be cancelled.”

Ruth added: “We followed the advice of medical practitioners and the Scottish and UK governments.

“We consulted with the organisers of all the events and, even though we were talking about 12 weeks from now,
everyone agreed that we should cancel.

“This means that we
will not be doing the advance planning that is required
in terms of applying for funding, licences, lets, permits,
etc.

“Milngavie Community
Development Trust who
organise the programme, plan to will look at the situation whenever things becomes clear and decide what to do next.

“It would be great if something could happen later this year to bring the community together but we will have to wait and see.”
