Newton Mearns care home sees first resident vaccinated

Eric Dobson, 61, who is a resident at Newton House Care Home in North Greenlaw Way, Newton Mearns, said he was delighted to get the revolutionary jab last week.

He said: “It’s a huge relief to finally be part of this amazing effort. I know there is still some time to wait, but it does mean the day is getting closer when I can hug my two brothers once again.”

Eric, who used to work at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, will receive his second jab of the same vaccine in three weeks’ time.

Thousands of vaccinations have already taken place across the UK, the first country in the world to approve the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 jab, after regulators approved it for use at the beginning of December.

Newton House Care home manager Pauline Hunter said: “We are delighted to be part of this programme because this vaccine will eventually allow people’s lives to return to some kind of normality.

“It is a major moment for our residents as well as our staff. We must thank the local authorities for working so hard in getting this vaccine to the most vulnerable.

“Everyone including the residents, staff and families have waited so patiently for this moment.”

As the vaccine programme is rolled out across Scottish care homes, vaccinators and healthcare staff are being given the jab at vaccination hubs which have been set up in hospitals across Scotland.
