Specsavers in Newton Mearns has supported Jay in his training for the 2020 Paralympic Games by funding his entry fee at the Giffnock 10K race.

Jay is from Knightswood and has been living with Choroideremia – a condition which affects one in 50,000 people. This condition will eventually result in Jay losing his sight completely.

The visually impaired runner is looking into a private stem cell operation which he hopes will protect the little vision he has left.

Jay is set to raise awareness of the condition by completing races across the country in his kilt.

He is hopeful that his positive attitude, as well as bold running attire, will help to push him closer to his fundraising target of £25,000.

Jay said: “I was diagnosed with my condition in 2014, with very little support. I am hoping to raise awareness of the condition and help others out there by sharing my story.

“I couldn’t do any of this without my running guides, who keep me in high spirits throughout each and every race.

“My son is my biggest supporter, and I love making him feel proud when I cross the finish line.”

Emma Robb, store director at Specsavers Newton Mearns, said: “We are really proud of Jay and all the inspiring work he has been doing since being diagnosed. “The Giffnock 10K attracts hundreds of running enthusiasts from across Glasgow, and we are very happy to have helped Jay in his journey training for Tokyo 2020.”

Jay has a JustGiving page to raise funds for life-changing surgery in America. If you would like to donate or find out more about Jay’s journey, visit his page or follow his social channels @JayCruzSemple
