Queen Elizabeth University Hospital glowing green for Organ Donation Week

The UK’s largest hospital - the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow - is glowing green until Sunday night in support of Organ Donor Week.

The law around organ donation in Scotland is changing in 2020.

As a result all eligible adults may be considered as having agreed to donate their organs when they die unless they record a decision not to donate.

By lighting up the QEUH, the hope is that raising awareness will get people across Greater Glasgow and Clyde thinking about organ donation. The week is also encouraging people to record their organ donation decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register and let their family know about their decision.

Anne Harkness, South Sector director, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: “Organ Donation Week is a big chance to raise awareness and help people understand what is involved.

“We wanted to make a very visual statement and by lighting up the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital we can play a part in getting the message across and help focus people on the lives that can be saved through organ donation.

“Being able to donate organs and help people who desperately need transplants is one of the greatest accomplishments of modern medicine.”
