The SNP MP recently asked the UK Government what discussions they have had with schools, university and college students, and youth groups on how they can engage with COP26, and was told the Government had been working closely with young people and youth NGOs to ensure COP26 is inclusive and that this is incorporated into the legacy of the UK’s presidency.

COP refers to the decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. In November 2021, the UK will be hosting the 26th annual session of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention, or “COP26”, in Glasgow. At the summit, delegates including heads of state, climate experts and negotiators will come together to agree coordinated action to tackle climate change.

The MP has now written to the President of COP26, Rt Hon Alok Sharma MP, asking for the UK Government to provide details as to how young people can get involved with the climate conference.

Stewart McDonald said: “I am encouraged to hear the Government have been working closely with young people and youth NGOs to ensure COP26 is inclusive and that this is incorporated into the legacy of the UK’s presidency.

“However, I want to ensure that as many young people, schools, and youth groups as possible can participate in COP26.

“Many young people and schools in my constituency have been in touch to share their concerns regarding climate change, and it is clear they are keen to engage on this subject at the highest possible level, and COP26 is the ideal opportunity for young people around these isles, particularly those from the Southside, to do so.

“I have therefore written to the UK Government asking them to outline how young people across the Southside will be able to engage with COP26 in the coming weeks and months, so that I may share that information with them in the hope that they do express their views and opinions on this crucial climate conference.”
