Before the national close-down order, at the Railway Inn on Kirkton Street senior patrons were deeply touched when they were each given, as a gift, a large bag of shopping to spare them going to the shops and increasing their chances of contracting the virus.

One of them contacted the Gazette to say:”This act of kindness really deserves recognition. What a wonderful gesture.”

The daughter of an elderly Inn regular told the Gazette that June Martin and her staff at the pub were a credit to Carluke. She said: “In the midst of this crisis, this is a true reflection of the kindness and support this community has to offer and it was very gratefully received.

“Many in the town would also like to commend the dedication of the staff at Riverside Nursery, Carluke who, since Monday, have provided the necessary childcare support to families working in the core services.

“This childcare is for nursery and school age children to ensure their parents can continue to provide the community with the essential services which we all rely heavily on at his difficult time.

“Margaret and her staff at Riverside Nursery put their own and their families’ health at risk to continue to provide outstanding childcare services to ensure other essential service workers can be where they need to be at this very difficult time.”
