Permission granted for opencast coal mine near Hawksland

RESIDENTS of the Douglas Valley will have another opencast coal mine on their doorstep following the decision by South Lanarkshire Council to grant planning permission at a site near Hawksland.

The north extension to the Broken Cross site was approved by the council’s planning committee at a meeting on Tuesday.

Scottish Coal was granted permission to extract one million tonnes of coal from the site.
