Phoenix Choir on the lookout for new members

One of Scotland’s most illustrious and long-established choirs is staging an open rehearsal on October 5 in the Adelaide’s Church Centre at 209 Bath Street in Glasgow – and it’s a perfect opportunity for would-be singers to get involved.

You do not have to have the skill and gravitas of a latter-day Pavarotti to gain a place with the choir, as all types and skill levels can join.

However, the Phoenix is particularly keen to attract sopranos, tenors and basses. The mixed choir also hopes to encourage spouses and partners to join as associate members.

The open rehearsal will include a buffet when newcomers can meet choir members and ask questions about how the typical season operates, and what role individual members are expected to play in proceedings.

The choir has just begun its 65th season and performs about 20 concerts a year.

With a library of over 1000 titles and over 30 albums recorded, the choir’s extensive and varied repertoire includes music from West End/Broadway shows and “easy listening” numbers, through to oratorio, opera, chamber music, and sacred music from all the major composers – and, of course, Scottish song.

The choir has recorded many programs for television and radio, including the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall and even an episode of the BBC Scotland comedy “Still Game”.

It has also accompanied Michael Crawford during his UK tour and has performed in many concerts for the Gubbay Organisation.

Today the choir continues to perform at numerous Arts and Music Festivals in the UK, Europe, Canada and USA.
