Councillors have agreed plans for parking enforcement which will now be submitted to the Scottish Government for approval.

The work would be carried out by environmental protection officers employed by North Lanarkshire Council.

Transport convener Councillor James Coyle said: “Town centres are the heart of our communities and the council has invested significantly in improving them for local people.

“However, illegal parking is an ongoing problem for town centres, with vehicles parking on pavements, in disabled bays and staying all day in short-term spaces.”

“By introducing a decriminalised parking enforcement scheme we will ensure a turnover of parking space for shoppers as well as improved traffic flow and safety.”

The work needed to set up the scheme, including signage and line painting, has been costed at £300,000 which would be met from the current roads budget.

However the plans have previously been described as “unworkable” unless car parking charges are introduced at the same time.
