They are building a special sensory room for six-year-old Ben but they need to raise thousands of pounds to kit it out with the specialised equipment it needs.

“It is a calming place,” said his mum Louise Ireland. “With two younger children, the house can be busy and this is somewhere he can chill out.”

Louise and husband Colin and their supporters have raised £2000 of the £8000 they need.

“If we get help from the public, we reckon the room could be ready for Christmas but we can’t afford to do it ourselves,” said Louise.

Those with autism have difficulty processing everyday sensory information – sounds, sights and smells – and the sensory room will give him a quiet place, when the buzz of the house is too much for him.

The room shell is already up at their home in Cairneymount Road and now they hope the wider community will come on board to help them kit it out.
