Police alert on stolen detonators

British Transport Police (BTP) is warning members of the public about the dangers of mishandling railway detonators after six were stolen from the Carfin area early on Sunday.

Some time between 00.45am and 1.45am the detonators (example pictured) – which are round and bright yellow in colour – were taken from a the railway line beside Carfin station.

Inspector Gary Brown, the BTP officer with responsibility for the railway in that area, said: “In the wrong hands the detonators can be extremely dangerous if not used for the purpose they were intended.

“If anyone finds, or is offered, the distinctive items please don’t be tempted to misuse them and risk serious injury. I would urge you to get in touch with BTP as a matter of urgency.”

The detonators are used to warn railway maintenance workers that a train is approaching.

Anyone with information about those responsible for the thefts should contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 or by texting 61016. Information can also be given anonymously on 0800 555 111.
