Police chiefs cop earful over proposed closures

And it is believed they have told police chiefs: DON’T do it!

When the Gazette exclusively reported last month that the public access counters at Carluke, Biggar and Lesmahagow Police Stations – plus scores of others throughout Scotland – were to close as an economy measure, it sparked off campaigns to save them.

There was a month-long public consultation period running to October 30, and the Gazette understands that local folk have made clear their desire to see direct access to their police officers at their local stations maintained.

In Biggar, its MP David Mundell launched a petition campaign which, at time of going to press, had attracted over 200 signatures. He is also asking Scottish Justice Minister Kenny McAskill to intervene to stop the closures.

In Lesmahagow, its MP, Michael McCann also started a petition.

“The public counter service is an element of our democracy. It demonstrates that the police are accessible and accountable and that the public can get direct access to a local police service.

“This proposal damages that relationship and, in turn, would damage the credibility of the police force within our democracy,” he said.

A Police Scotland spokesman said that there had been a very large response and it might be some time before the results were properly considered.
