Police make fresh appeal over disappearance of vulnerable 88-year-old a week ago

Officers said the family of the 88-year-old woman from Knightswood are devastated and desperate for information over her disappearance.

Janet is described as white, 4ft 10 inches in height, of slight build and with short grey/white hair. She is believed to be wearing a light cream coloured jacket with a hood, dark trousers, dark maroon boots and carrying a brown handbag and a carrier bag.

Enquiries have revealed that Janet may have a pink jacket in her possession in addition to the jacket she is described as wearing.

Officers have been reviewing all available public and private CCTV, speaking to residents during door to door enquiries, and issuing numerous appeals via social media and media.

Today, officers are issuing images of the light coloured jacket and bag Janet had on when she went missing, in the hope that it may help the public identify her, and ultimately lead to her being returned safe.

Chief Inspector John McBride, of Drumchapel Police Office said today: “We are very concerned for Janet’s safety and wellbeing, given her age and her vulnerabilities. Her family are devastated and very distressed at her disappearance, and just want to get her home safe and well as soon as possible.

“We’ve been co-ordinating a number of searches in areas that Janet may be or have travelled to, but unfortunately these have proved unsuccessful. The support we’ve received from the local community and beyond has been a great help, and thousands of people have shared her image online along with the appeal.

“Officers have also been following up a number of reported sightings of Janet, regrettably none of these enquiries have resulted in Janet being traced.

“We’ve been working closely with First Bus and other travel companies, as Janet is known to travel by bus around the Knightswood, Scotstoun, Glasgow City Centre, Govan, Largs and Helensburgh areas. I’d like to reiterate our appeal to bus travellers to keep an eye out for Janet.

“A team of officers continue to work on this inquiry, and we’ll be out stopping and speaking to local residents and motorists in the areas of Knightswood on Wednesday, a week on from when she was first reported missing.

“We’ve also circulated Janet’s image and description to the charity Missing People, who have been able to issue this image to Royal Mail delivery staff via their handheld PDAs (personal digital assistants) and they are arranging for her image to be displayed in their digiboards in train stations etc. We’ve also circulated her image to Firstbus for bus drivers, for them to keep an eye out on their usual routes.

“I would like to strongly reiterate our appeal to the public, please help us by sharing Janet’s image online. If you live in the areas that Janet was last seen or in an area she may have travelled to, please check any outbuildings or sheds you might have, as she may have taken refuge in there.

“Please look at the image of the jacket and the bag – do they ring a bell with you? Have you seen a lady matching Janet’s description wearing any of these items? Please contact police immediately on 101, as you may have vital information which could help us.”
