Police out in force during clamp down on drivers

MORE than 60 law-breaking drivers have been caught during September’s road safety initiative.

This month, dedicated officers within East Renfrewshire are on vigilant patrol, aiming to stamp out those who continue to use a mobile while driving, those who speed and those who refuse to wear a seatbelt.

This follows complaints from residents about dangerous conditions on southside roads.

Funding from East Renfrewshire council will allow the purchase of an additional speed detection gun.

In one of the first days of patrol earlier this month, a male motorist was reported for driving at a speed of 81 miles per hour in a 40 mph zone.

Since then, more than 25 have been caught for speeding, 28 drivers have been spotted not wearing a seatbelt, and nine have been fined for use of a mobile while driving.

Several drunk drivers have also been identified by police.

Chief inspector Campbell Crawford, East Ren’s area commander, told The Extra: “My aim is to reduce road casualties and deaths within East Renfrewshire.

“Through this campaign of education and enforcement I am looking to influence driver behaviour and thereby cut the number of accidents and associated injuries.”

East Renfrewshire police have also added a new unmarked Q car — fitted with blue lights, LCD display and sirens — to their fleet in a bid to further boost road patrols.
