Police probe incidents in Cumbernauld

A SUSPECTED act of of wilful fire raising at a local nursing home is now being investigated by police - after a major tragedy was averted on Friday.

Firefighters rushed to Rannoch Lodge in Condorrat around 4pm after a horrified member of staff discovered a fire in an unoccupied room. An evacuation of the building swung into play as the blaze was extinguished.

Fortunately no-one was injured but the News understands that detectives are now following a positive line of enquiry into the incident. A spokesperson said: “We are still keen to speak to anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area.’’

Witnesses are also being sought for a brazen broad daylight act of vandalism in Balloch.

A Vauxhall Astra parked in Grampian Way was targeted by a thug who scratched its paintwork at some point between 2.3pm and 8.30pm on Friday (June 24).

Abronhill was the focus of a major police incident on Sunday following a mysterious incident in Birch Road.

Police cars and an ambulance rushed to the scene on an otherwise quiet Sunday morning after a man was found with head injuries. Officers have stated at time of going to press that they did not know how these injuries were sustained.

And a Cumbernauld convenience store fell prey to an armed robbery last Wednesday evening.

The News and Chronicle has learned that a lone staff member was working at Braehead Stores in Kildrum when he was subject to a horror ordeal after two black-clad men burst into the premises.

Their faces were concealed - and their next move was to brandish knives at the terrified staff member. The men then plundered the store, escaping with a quantity of cash and cigarettes. Police believe a third man was stationed at the door, acting as a lookout.

Police have issued a description of the three men they are trying to trace. One was five foot four inches and was wearing a black jacket with goggles in its hood and black trousers. Another man who is five foot seven inches tall was wearing a blue and white scarf, a plain black cap and black trousers. The third man who was thought to be five foot and nine inches was wearing a black waterproof jacket, a bright green scarf and dark trousers.
