Police urge locals to know their limits

The £10,500 festive safety campaign has been running throughout December, with a focus on the dangers of drinking too much and leaving yourself vulnerable.

Additional resources have been deployed across the city to keep revellers safe and prevent them from falling victim to crime or injury as a result of too much booze — including a new Nite Zone for Shawlands.

Phil Walker, managing director of Community Safety Glasgow, said: “The festive period is a time when many people over-indulge on alcohol, to a level they are not used to.

“We’re urging party-goers to consider spacing out their drinks, alternating alcoholic drinks with a soft drink and to avoid pre-drinking.”

The Shawlands Nite Zone — a taxi rank policed by marshalls — is the latest rolled out across Glasgow.

Additional resources include officers patrolling on foot on Friday and Saturday nights, focusing on areas not covered by CCTV.

Community Safety will also liaise with Glasgow Taxi Association to form a link between the radio network and taxi marshalls.

The campaign has been rolled out to pubs across the city in conjunction with Best Bar None Glasgow — a smartphone app which allows users to rate nightspots.

Bill Butler, chair of Glasgow City Licensing Board, added: “As one of the largest cities in the UK, it is of utmost importance to us that people not only enjoy themselves on a night out in Glasgow but, crucially, that they do so safely.”
