Police warn of detonator danger

BRITISH Transport Police officers are warning of the dangers of misusing railway detonators after 30 of the devices were stolen from Holytown Train Station.

Officers state that the detonators, which were stolen between 11.30pm on Wednesday, October 25 and 9pm the following evening, could be dangerous if they are placed in the wrong hands.

Detective Sergeant Nicola Phillips said: “In the wrong hands these devices will be extremely dangerous. With Bonfire Night so close I am concerned that someone might put the detonators in a fire, and the consequences of such a stupid action do not bear thinking about.”

The devices, which are used by rail staff as a warning signal, have caused damage in the past if they are not used properly.

In August a 15-year-old boy, from Essex, was blinded in one eye after he, and a number of his friends, threw detonators onto a fire near a railway depot.

Anyone finding the distinctive objects, or has any knowledge of who may be responsible for stealing them, is asked to contact BTP immediately.

British Transport Police can be contacted on 0800 405040 or information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
