Police warning over bag dipping

Shoppers are being warned to be on their guard following a number of bag dipping incidents last week.

A woman was targeted in Lidl in Kilsyth at around noon on Thursday, September 19. She went into her bag and noticed that her purse had been stolen.

Safer communities officer Michael Duffy, said: “Bag dipping can happen at any time but it will usually happen in a built up area or even in a premises were you might not be fully concentrating on bag security. The methods used vary however this form of distraction theft will usually involve either an individual or a small team who will pick their victim before striking. Be wary of persons standing near by and also of strangers trying to distract you by engaging you in conversation or physically bumping into you. Always have your bag closed and in sight. The use of purse bells is recommended.”
