Police warning to lock doors after spate of thefts
According to inspector Alan Dickson, seven thefts from cars were reported, each taking place overnight Friday or Saturday (October 18 and 19), as well as one theft of a car.
All in the incidents took place in the area surrounding Stewarton Road.
The car stolen — a Mini Cooper — was taken from Priorwood Road on Saturday night after thieves gained access to the house via an unlocked back door and took the keys.
In another incident, 30 Irvine Royal Academy blazers were taken from a car on Crarae Place.
Inspector Dickson told The Extra that these “opportunistic” thefts are unrelated to the spate of car thefts reported in Newton Mearns in July.
He added: “There’s a pattern in terms of the streets targeted, and we suspect they’ve been trying car or house doors to see if they’re unlocked.
“If anyone saw someone prowling around at the weekend, please give us a call.
“We’d also like to remind residents to ensure that their doors are locked.
“Electrical equipment, clothing and sat navs have been stolen as well as the blazers — if anyone has information on these being sold, please contact us on 532 5700 or 101.”
