Axe falls on 170 jobs at South Lanarkshire Council

SOUTH Lanarkshire Council Leader Eddie McAvoy has insisted frontline services will be protected – despite £13 million of budget cuts accepted by the council’s Executive Committee.

Under the plans, approximately 170 jobs will go – 53 posts in the council’s community resources, 40 in education, 41 in social work, 29 in housing and nine in corporate services.

The number of lollipop men and women across South Lanarkshire will be reduced with 50 patrols being cut across the county.

The axe will also fall on eight unmanned public toilets with a review of the operating hours of the remaining lavatories.

However, council leader Eddie McAvoy said: “We are doing everything possible to protect our essential frontline services here in South Lanarkshire.

“That’s the instruction I gave council officers as they drew up the proposals which have now been approved by the Executive Committee.”

The total budget of around £670 million will now go before the full council for approval on February 13.
