However, the election will be like no other before as it too has been impacted by the pandemic, leading to special arrangements at local polling stations.

Returning office Cleland Sneddon, chief executive of South Lanarkshire Council, said: “I would like to reassure everyone that their safety is of paramount importance to us when they are voting.

“Actions are being taken to ensure polling places are Covid-secure so you will be able to vote safely.

“This includes the provision of hand sanitiser and additional cleaning measures and we would ask people when voting to please follow physical-distancing requirements and wear a face covering.

"Our polling station staff and Covid Marshalls will be on hand to answer any questions and ensure physical distancing is maintained.

“You can bring your own pen or pencil if you wish. However, single use pencils will also be available for voters.”

If you are unable to attend a polling station because of a positive Covid-19 test immediately prior to polling day, an emergency proxy can be appointed to vote on your behalf.
