Finally, after all the electioneering of the past six weeks, the day has arrived for you to cast your vote in the East Renfrewshire Council elections.

There are five wards — One: Barrhead, Liboside and Uplawmoor; Two: Newton Mearns North and Neilston; Three: Giffnock and Thornliebank; Four: Clarkston, Netherlee and Williamwood and Five: Newton Mearns South and Eaglesham.

There are nine parties fielding candidates — Conservatives, Greens, SNP, Labour, UKIP, SDP, Liberal Democrats, Labour and Co-operative and the Scottish Libertarian Party, along with nine independents who are standing throughout the wards.

Straw polls and feelings from hustings events suggest there may be one or two upsets in the balance of local power, with many of the independents running their campaigns on the basis that residents want a change from a councillor who will only ‘toe the party line’.
