East Dunbartonshire MP is discharged from hospital

East Dunbartonshire MP Amy Callaghan has been 
discharged from hospital 
after suffering a brain 
haemorrhage in June.

The 28-year-old SNP MP broke the news on social media on Friday as she prepared to leave the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

She posted: “I was wheeled in here. Now I’m walking out.”

The local politician has been undergoing intensive rehabilitation and had life-saving surgeries after being rushed to hospital. She was found collapsed at home on June 10 by her partner Sean.

Ms Callaghan told the Herald her experience at the QEUH had served to strengthen her commitment to the NHS and care services.

She praised the “miracle” care at the hospital and thanked constituents for their support over the past four months.

She said: “I’m incredibly grateful for all the love and support shown to me. After what has been a difficult period away from family,

“I’m delighted to say I have finally returned home from hospital.

“I’d like to thank everyone in the constituency who has offered their well wishes over the past few months.

“I must also extend my gratitude to my team whose hard work and dedication meant anyone reaching out to me during this period, still received the support they required.

“As I continue my road to recovery, I would certainly not be where I am today if 
it wasn’t for all the amazing staff at Physically Disabled 
Rehabilitation Unit at the QEUH .

“I cannot thank everyone involved in my care enough.

“This experience has only served to strengthen my already unwavering commitment to support the NHS and care services as best I can during my time as an MP.

“To the miracle team at NHS Glasgow and Clyde – now my second family – thank you. I can never, ever repay you.”

Hundreds of well-wishers tweeted their delight.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon posted on Friday it was the “best news of the day”.

While Bishopbriggs singing star Amy MacDonald posted: “Awesome news. Wishing you all the best in your next steps to recovery.”

Rossvale Football Club tweeted: “Brilliant news Amy. Stay strong and stay safe.”

Ms Callaghan, who has previously fought skin cancer, was elected to Westminster last December after ousting Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson from the East Dunbartonshire seat.
