Free sanitary products to be made available across South Lanarkshire

Free sanitary products will be made available in over 100 premises across South Lanarkshire in a bid to combat period poverty.

South Lanarkshire Council, working in partnership with South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture (SLLC) and NHS Lanarkshire, have identified around 120 premises that would be suitable for the scheme.

Scottish Government funding of over £250,000 will allow the council to roll out the scheme within its own and SLLC properties by May 6.

A report is due to go before the council’s executive committee on Wednesday detailing the progress made so far.

Voluntary sector organisations are also working alongside the council so that the number of premises where sanitary products are available will continue to increase.

The report states that: “Facilities include leisure centres, libraries, standalone nurseries and NHS facilities.

“The key criteria for selection is that the public using these facilities have access to toilet provision.

“These facilities have been mapped to ensure an appropriate geographical spread, in particular including areas with higher levels of income deprivation.”

Products will be made available in female toilets as well as shared gender and unisex toilets.

In September, South Lanarkshire Council announced plans to provide sanitary products in every primary, secondary and additional support needs school.
