Airdrie and Shotts MP Neil Gray said the 39 per cent increase was the highest in Scotland and puts burial costs at £1,727, well above the Scottish average of £1,373.

A Citizens’ Advice Scotland report said the cost of burying a loved one in North Lanarkshire is the seventh highest in Scotland.

Mr Gray said: “This rise is astronomical. It seems those who are emotionally vulnerable are being asked to pay for years of financial mismanagement by the council.”

However, the council said the rise had allowed it to “maintain the existing high level of service we provide”.
