Online meetings for community councils approved

Labour’s Finance and Corporate spokesperson Councillor Monique McAdams had previously planned to submit a motion calling for this action to be taken, but withdrew it when the administration gave a commitment to consult on the matter.

She said: “The Covid-19 pandemic has changed all our lives and many of us are finding new ways of working, making much more use of technology and video-conferencing software.

“It makes perfect sense that the option to meet virtually should also be available to community councils as this will help to facilitate an inclusive environment.

“It allows us to address not only what assists people with a mobility or sensory impairment but what would benefit older people, those with babies or young children.

“That is why I had previously presented a competent motion ahead of the last full council meeting to ask my fellow elected members to support me in asking the council to review rules governing the Community Councils.

“However, I was also happy to withdraw my motion, after been given a commitment that the council would carry out a consultation on changing their scheme.

“I look forward to us being able to work with our communities to help make these new arrangements a success.”
