Plans to create new building in Cumbernauld Village blocked again

A planning application for a single storey building in the Wynd in Cumbernauld Village has been refused again.

At a North Lanarkshire Council planning meeting on Thursday, September 8 Councillor Tom Johnston, who is one of three members for the Abronhill, Kildrum and Cumbernauld Village ward, moved to oppose the proposals which were first refused in November 2014 with an appeal failing in March 2015.

Although the plans have been significantly revised and the council’s reporter had recommended permission be granted, the planning committee again refused to give approval

Councillor Johnston said: “This building is planned for retail and office use. It will add to the parking congestion in the car park to the rear of Cumbernauld Village. The car park is sloped and varies in width and is already difficult to drive into. The Council’s Roads Department acknowledges that the current car park is operating above capacity and this is resulting in inappropriate car parking practices.

“It is therefore unacceptable to allow no extra parking for this proposed development and just accept that ‘it will be all right on the night’ in the Village car park. We will face a future with a need to provide disabled parking and there are currently no designated residential parking spaces.

“Surprisingly, there are over 50 businesses operating in Cumbernauld Village. Car parking spaces are at a premium. Simply adding an extra office or retail business without parking is unacceptable.”
