Poppy fields will pay tribute

Cleland Parish Church is planning to create a red woollen poppies scene looking onto Main Street, while the project at the linked charge of St Mark’s will be across the forecourt grass land area looking on to Coltness Road

The Rev Graham Austin said: “We plan to have the two sites ready two weeks before Armistice and keep it open for two weeks after the Armistice Day service.

“I think it is very important to remember lives lost, to give thanks for sacrifices made and to continue to pray and work for peace.”

The Rev Austin thanked all those who have been busy with their knitting needles.

He said: “The support we have had from our team of volunteers has been tremendous – they were quick to support our idea of creating woollen poppies when we hinted at the outset we would probably need around 5000 poppies.

“They enthusiastically started knitting or crocheting the wool and at the beginning of this month I took great pleasure in informing the congregation that we had created an incredible total of 6585.”

“We hope the two scenes will be appreciated by the communities as together we remember.”
