Normally the provosts of South and North Lanarkshire jointly host an annual event for couples celebrating their 50th anniversary.

Unfortunately the global pandemic meant this couldn’t go ahead year, but the council still wants to offer its congratulations by arranging to send a gift.

South Lanarkshire provost Ian McAllan said: “The golden wedding celebrations are always a highlight of my year and it is an absolute privilege to attend the event.

“Hearing the stories of how couples met and the ups and downs of their married life is always a joy, and the atmosphere created make it a thoroughly enjoyable occasion for everyone.

“The events are always very well attended but of course it was just not possible for it to go ahead last year because of the restrictions in place due to Covid-19.

“However, I hope as many couples as possible will get in touch with us to allow us the opportunity to send them a small token to commemorate such a wonderful milestone.
