Popular path has been ‘swallowed’ by driveway, claim parents

A PROBE has been launched after the disappearance of a ‘crucial’ public footpath into a housing scheme.

The path, which runs from Campsie View into Fraser Gardens, Kirkintilloch, has been fenced off, barring access into the latter.

And as the path provides access to St Ninian’s High and Lairdsland Primary, locals have claimed an alternative route is potentially dangerous to children walking to school.

East Dunbartonshire Council said it was unaware of the path being blocked until now and will now investigate the complaint.

One concerned resident said: “I used to walk my little girl to school at Lairdsland Primary through the path behind Adamslie, but we’re now forced to walk along Glasgow Road.

“If you have ever walked along that road then you’ll know just how narrow it is and a few of the other parents have said how dangerous it is to walk the children along there.

“There is a country path which runs alongside Park Burn, but during the

winter months that route will be horrible to take kids to school — I don’t think many parents would enjoy seeing school clothes and shoes covered in muck.

“More to the point, I don’t think parents would want their children walking near that burn on their own if they are using the country path to visit friends. That’s why the path into Fraser Gardens is important for us.”

Another resident said: “That path is hugely important to people who live in this area and it has been such a hassle for us since it has become inaccessible.

“A lot of people around here had used it every day, but for some reason it has been blocked — no-one around here was told about it.

“While it may seem trivial to some, it is still a public path and shouldn’t be closed without anyone informing us why.”

David Devine, head of roads and neighbourhood services at the council, said: “Now that we have been made aware of this situation we will look into it.”

As the council had no involvement in the incident, it is believed the path may have been blocked by a resident of Fraser Gardens.
