Village senior citizens are having to trek into Cumbernauld’s often crowded main post office to pick up their pensions, after the sub-post office came under attack.

It had its cash machine blown up by a gang at 5am on Wednesday December 10 and hasn’t opened since.

A fortnight ago, a spokesman told this newspaper that a re-opening was on the cards but we can reveal that this has shown no sign of materialising.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of The Village Post Office branch on Cumbernauld Main Street following the terrible attack on the branch.

“Safety is a serious concern and, as extensive repair work is required at the site, the branch will remain closed until further notice. We would like to reassure customers that the closure is temporary and we are working hard to restore the service to the community as soon as possible,’’ she added.

Police “cannot outrule” that the gang who took the five figure sum in the raid are linked to other attacks on ATMs across the UK.

Last week police issued an appeal to find a 29-year -old fugitive from Liverpool called Adam Murphy who has been linked with the attacks.
