Postmen call on dog owners to keep their pets under control

Last year more than 45 postmen and women were attacked by dogs in the Greater Glasgow area alone, with more than 5,500 more victims across the UK.

The number of attacks rises during the school holidays and in the summer months when parents and children are at home and dogs are often allowed out unsupervised in the garden.

To combat the issue an annual ‘Dog Awareness Week’ has been launched and took place for the first time last week.

Posters on the issue have been placed in Royal Mail offices, with question and answer sessions held online.

Steve Greaves, Royal Mail’s local director of safety, said: “Last year across the country the number of dog attacks on our people fell, However there were still over 45 incidents in Glasgow and we need to reduce this number further.”
