SOCIAL club members have thanked the Herald after repairs were carried out to a car park which had become a health and safety nightmare.

The condition of the car park at Kirkintilloch Miners’ Welfare Club had been blamed for at least two serious injuries in the past month – with people tripping on holes in the tarmac.

Last week East Dunbartonshire Council chiefs, who have continued to insist they have no responsibility for the land, filled in the holes.

Club secretary Florence Cairney said: “Just after the article was published in the Herald council leader Rhondda Geekie got in touch and arranged for the holes to be filled.

“We can’t thank her enough - she’s always been a good friend to the club and has supported us over the years.

“I’d also like to thank the Herald, because if it hadn’t been for the story I’m sure nothing would have been done.”
