Protection for historic New Lanark - but what about historic old Lanark?

WHY isn’t old Lanark getting the same special treatment as New Lanark under new measures to protect the village’s historic heart?

That question has been raised following South Lanarkshire Council announcing new tougher regulations on what can – and what cannot – be built or altered in the World Heritage Village to protect its unique character and lucrative tourist pulling-power.

However, one planning expert has stated: “This seems like good news for New Lanark ...but what about old Lanark? It has a far longer and richer history than the village down the hill and, if anything, deserves and needs protection more.”
