Protesters celebrate as Waterfoot bid is pulled

As reported in The Extra last month, an assessment by Scottish Government reporters of East Renfrewshire’s Local Development Plan spelled good news for Waterfoot campaigners,

It recommended against using the land for development and stating that it would “represent significant intrusion...and a major change to the landscape”.

Now, campaigners are delighted with news that Gladman Developments Ltd has withdrawn its application for a 46 acre residential scheme.

John McCourt, of Waterfoot Action, told The Extra: “We are delighted with this news and would like to thank everyone who campaigned against this unwanted development.

“For the time being, our village is safe and a piece of East Ren’s valuable green belt has been protected. Although we know that the future may still bring other applications, we will continue to fight against any such ill-considered plans.”

Ken Macintosh MSP welcomed the news, and congratulated Waterfoot residents for having their say.

The Eastwood man said: “This will be a huge relief to the whole community. Waterfoot was united in opposing this speculative development, and the council had made it clear that there was no room in their plans to build all over the green belt.

“I’m relieved that Gladman have finally seen sense and put an end to the anxiety which has weighed on the shoulders of residents.”

West of Scotland MSP and Waterfoot resident Jackson Carlaw added: “This is a triumph for all those who have campaigned to retain the integrity of Waterfoot. It’s not often communities take on the ‘big boys’ and win.

“As a resident and an MSP, I pay tribute to all the local people I have supported and the many residents who responded to my survey and who have supported me as we have seen off this unwanted development together. For once — three cheers all round!”
