The Biggar toilets are part of the Corn Exchange building which is home to Biggar Theatre Workshop on a 25 year lease, and the Workshop have agreed to take on the running of the toilets until a new charity is set up to run the toilets.

Councillors on South Lanarkshire’s Housing and Technical Resources Committee approved the proposals on Wednesday.

Chairman Councillor Alex McInnes said: “There is clearly strong support in the community for this plan which will see the Theatre Workshop bring a wealth of experience in managing projects and operating a building take responsibility for the toilets to allow more time for a community takeover.”

“While the £1 per annum rent might appear low it is important to set that against the Theatre Workshop accepting all responsibility for running costs and maintenance.”

Under the community plans, spelled out at a public meeting earlier this year, the toilets will be automated instead of having permanent attendants.

South Lanarkshire Council has already approved a grant from Biggar’s Common Good Fund to help with the changeover.
