£12 million worth of council cuts agreed

AS Britain tightens its belt and budgets are bursting for families across the country, South Lanarkshire councillors had the unenviable task of rubber-stamping £12 million of cuts which will hit a variety of frontline services.

Public halls in Clydesdale will be forced to close while public lavatories will also go down the pan in the latest council cutbacks.

Fitness fanatics will be forced to fork out extra for using the council’s leisure facilities while the cost of burying loved ones is also set to rocket.

The cuts received cross-party support at this week’s Executive Committee meeting of the council.

Two proposals were dropped from the council’s original list – reducing school crossing patrollers and a review into primary school class sizes were both binned.

The council claimed that this move alone had saved 30 full time jobs.

But council leader Eddie McAvoy warned of difficult years ahead for the council as it bids to balance the books – with more cuts expected in the next two financial years.
