£12k pupil premium for Malawi

PUPILS and staff at Langside primary have raised a staggering £12,000 to donate to children in Malawi.

The money, which has been raised by pupils organising fundraising initiatives over the past six years, will be donated to the Holyrood secondary school’s Malawi fund.

The £12,000 is being added to £7,000 donated by former Holyrood pupils Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill, of Simple Minds, and will be used to erect two classrooms at Matindi and Zingwanga primary schools, as well as refurbish 10 classrooms at the Catholic Institute primary.

Christine Wilson, headteacher at Langside primary, said: “This has been a long-term project — it began as our school’s centenary project and parents and pupils past and present committed to the aspiration to build classrooms in Malawi.

“The children have done everything from selling sponsorship to local businesses to donating pocket money on their quest.

“One girl recently brought in the money that would have been spent on goody bags for her birthday party, but donated to our build a school fund instead.

“I’m over the moon now to hand over a cheque for this amazing amount to the Holyrood pupils going out to Malawi next month”.

And from famous musicians to film stars — a school in East Renfrewshire has come over all Hollywood this week.

Calderwood Lodge, premiered a new film, detailing life at the school in a glitzy Oscar-style ceremony.

Everyone was involved in creating the movie tour, and parents were invited along the red carpet to see what the pupils had created to mark the start of the school’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

Headteacher Vanessa Thomson commented: “All children from nursery right up to primary seven were involved in the project, and Calderwood became Hollywood for the day.

And finally, a student at Belmont House school had cause for celebration recently as his artwork was highlighted for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe art prize.
