As part of the Kirkintilloch Town Centre Masterplan, the Townhead section of the town centre will be improved during works expected to last 12 weeks.

Work is scheduled to start on Monday, August 26, until the end of November – during which time 10 parallel parking bays will be added, followed by resurfacing of pavements and finally improvements to crossing points.

More painted bays will be introduced in a future phase of the improvements.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie explained that the works will address some of the points raised during the extensive community consultation which took place at the beginning of the masterplan process.

She said: “When asked for their views on this part of the town centre, people told us that they would like to see the quality of pavements and crossing points at junctions improved, and they would like more parking. Building on that feedback, we spoke to traders and came up with this project which is starting soon.

“Anyone using the town centre will be aware of different pieces of work going on – all as part of the Town Centre Masterplan. The Barleybank car park access has changed, new spaces have been added and designs are being drawn up to create a new public space at the church.

“The car park behind William Patrick Library has been extended and new steps and landscaping are being created down at West High Street. Things are happening and people should start noticing improvements.”

BT is scheduled to carry out works in Townhead soon to lay new cables in the footpaths.

Councillor Geekie added: “We are working closely with BT to ensure that their work is timed to allow their cables to be put in prior to us carrying out resurfacing.”
