Public asked to be wary of techno-scams in Clydesdale

A series of `techno-scams’ have been aimed at Clydesdale folk, ranging from bogus bank calls in Lanark to fake Inland Revenue refund offers in Rigside.

The spate of rip-offs has prompted the head of the area’s police, Chief Inspector Colin Murphy, to appeal to all not to give away personal details to ANYONE without complete proof of their identity.

He told the Gazette of an incident just this week in the Lanark area which the police are still investigating.

It involved a plausible conman phoning a local citizen, claiming to represent a major bank; the bogus caller said that the `bank’ was issuing them with a new ATM card and was sending a courier round to collect the old one.

The victim was assured that the courier would shortly return with the new card and the person’s new pin number.

Almost needless to say, the old card was indeed collected and taken away - and the courier never seen again.
