Pupils serve guests at annual VIP banquet

Pupils from East Renfrewshire schools recently cooked up a storm at an annual culinary arts banquet.

S5 and S6 students on the schools’ vocational programme, laid out a three-course feast at a special banquet for VIPs.

The young people are all on the programme’s culinary arts course and had to devise, cook and serve Michelin star quality dishes to a host of invited guests.

A spokeswoman said: “It is the highlight and biggest challenge of the year for the teenagers on the course, who come from Barrhead, St Luke’s, Willliamwood and Woodfarm high schools.

“Culinary arts is just one of a wide variety of courses on the vocational programme that S5 and S6 pupils can sign up to.

“Any pupils interested in taking part are being urged to apply now for the subject of their choice.

“The courses offer young people a chance to learn new skills out of the classroom that sets them on the road to work, training or further or higher education.”

The course works with West College Scotland and En Croute Catering and provides the pupils with an opportunity to gain the British Institute of Innkeeping level 1 & 2 and the REHIS health and safety certificate.

They gain practical skills in their chosen subject as well as valuable tools to help in the search for work experience, employment, higher or further education or training places.

Hilary Harris of En Croute Catering said: “We have been so impressed with some of the pupils in the past, we’ve actually taken them on as employees once they’ve left school.”
