Pupils turn on to e-Food

FOOD, Glorious, Food is about to take an exciting step forward for East Renfrewshire’s school pupils.

The local authority has become the first in the country to sign up to a new website.

Scottish School Meals is a national site that centres on making the school meal experience that little bit different.

The fully interactive site has information about nutrition and addresses the problem of obesity among many other items of interest.

The news comes soon after it was announced that East Ren’s school catering team were named the best in Britain for education catering.

The council is to go live with its own microsite as it teams up with the national site.

This microsite will include full, weekly menu planners for primary and secondary schools.

It will also feature recipes and nutritional information for all main meals that will allow parents and pupils to see exactly what their school lunches consist of.

The school catering team can also use the site to market special promotions and products.

Councillor Paul O’Kane, convener of education and equalities, said: “This will be an excellent resource for pupils and parents.

“They will be able to search what’s on the menu in any given week, as well as get exact information on any main meal, plus easy-to-follow recipes you can try at home.

“We hope that pupils engage with this exciting, new website.

“We want them to use the site for their own reference but we also want to get them involved by creating their own recipes, making films of cooking and eating and discussing some current topics.”

The main, national site is now live at www.scottishschoolmeals.co.uk, where you can find information on nutrition, food waste, sustainability, diet and fitness, obesity and health and much more.

The East Renfrewshire microsite will go live in the next few weeks.

EAST Ren’s catering service was named best performer in education catering earlier this year by the Association of Public Service Excellence. It is a UK-wide award.
