Question time for election hopefuls

WITH the council election just two weeks away, a special event will give locals the chance to quiz candidates in a key ward.

Condorrat Community Council has organised a hustings event which will involve the eight candidates in Cumbernauld South.

Seasoned watchers of the political scene will be playing particularly close attention to this ward – as two of its councillors will not be contesting their seats.

As we have reported, Labour veteran Councillor Gerry McElroy was dramatically de-selected several months ago and his colleague, ex senior union boss Danny Carrigan opted not to stand in the contest after serving just one term.

The event - which is the only one of its kind to be organised during this election campaign locally - will take place at Condorrat Social Club next Thursday (April 26) at 7pm for 7.30.

It will be independently chaired by Cumbernauld Rotarian Professor Frank Clarke who will give each speaker an allotted time slot.

Organiser John King said that this was an important occasion for anyone who cares about the political future of this ward. He said: “The candidates will be given a little time to put their views over and will then be questioned by the public.

“Obviously we want lots of people to come along so they can hear what the candidates have to say.”

The event is effectively a “last push” for those involved as the electoral contest itself will take place a week later on May 3.

The candidates for Cumbernauld South are: William Goldie Scottish National Party, Allan Graham Scottish Labour Party, Patrick Scott Hogg SNP, Willie Homer SNP, Donald Masterton Cumbernauld Independent Councillors Alliance, David McArthur, Scottish Conservative & Unionist Party Kevin McVey Scottish Socialist Party, Stephanie Muir Scottish Labour.

In line with our normal editorial policy regarding elections, the News and Chronicle will not feature any more election coverage until after the event.
