Railway bridge being replaced as part of electrification project

Work has begun to demolish and replace the road bridge over the railway at Stepps Train Station.

The move is part of the electrification of the Glasgow to Edinburgh line.

Some bridges need replaced because they are too low to run the electric wires under.

The bridge at Stepps has been restricted to one lane for many months due to load restrictions.

It’s expected to re-open around March next year. There is still a footbridge for pedestrians.

The Glasgow and Garnkirk railway through Stepps opened in 1831. It was one of the earliest railways opened in Scotland.

The original Stepps station at Cumbernauld Road, known as Steps Road, was the only intermediate stop on the line. It closed in 1962 and the new station, on a different site, opened in 1989.

The £400m electrification project will include 156 single track kilometres of electrification works and remodelling and platform extension work at Waverley, Queen St, Croy, Falkirk High, Polmont and Linlithgow.
