Ravenstruther coal terminal protest

ENVIRONMENTAL protesters have once again made their presence felt in Clydesdale – by causing disruption at the Ravenstruther coal terminal.

The incident last Wednesday saw protesters chaining themselves to the gates of the terminal, stopping production for a short period of time.

Organised by Coal Action Scotland, the protest resulted in four people being arrested.

In a statement a Coal Action Scotland spokesman said: "At 6am on November 10, supported by approximately 15 other campaigners, two protesters attached themselves to the front gate of the coal terminal, effectively preventing access to the site.

"At the same time, two other anti-coal activists scaled infrastructure and attached themselves to the coal conveyor belt.

"The action was taken in support of South Lanarkshire communities who are currently opposing a plague of open cast mines in their area."

Scottish Coal confirmed the incident but stated that disruption was minimal.
