Readers’ Letters

What our readers have been writing about this week

NHS care

Sir, – I would just like to congratulate the NHS staff of Ward 11 (knee replacement) at Monklands Hospital on the excellent treatment received after a knee replacement operation on August 26, 2011. All staff i.e. surgeons, anaesthetist, physio, porters, but especially the ward staff who made a harrowing experience less traumatic than I was expecting. Again I would like to thank them for their professionalism and dedication to the job, even although they were overworked. – Yours etc., JOHN McGOWAN Etive Crescent, Condorrat

Lack of X-ray vision

Sir, – NHS Lanarkshire do not seem to understand that it is not an improvement in service, asking the people of Cumbernauld & Kilsyth to travel to Monklands hospital if they require to be X-rayed. If you travel by public transport from Cumbernauld to Monklands hospital it is only a once-an-hour bus service, and if you travel from Kilsyth you change at Cumbernauld town centre. At the same time if you travel by public transport and you require an A&E dept like I have needed a couple of times I have taken the bus into the A&E Dept at the Royal. – Yours etc., COLIN WATSON Torbrex Road.Carbrain

Blood ban

Sir, – The relaxation of the ban on gay and bisexual men giving blood is welcome, but the requirement to have not had sex for a year will discourage potential donors. How many men would be willing to say that they are not getting any, and haven’t for some time? – Yours etc.,

Coffee time

Dear Sir, – Macmillan Cancer Support would like to invite all of your readers to take part in our World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on September 30. Just get together with friends or colleagues and enjoy cakes and a cuppa - a very enjoyable way of helping us raise the £8.5m we need to reach more people affected by cancer. The money you raise will help Macmillan fund specialist nurses, new cancer centres and grants to support people living with cancer who have financial problems. The Coffee Morning officially takes place on Friday 30 September, but if you can’t make that day, why not hold your event at another time? Whether you’d prefer to organise a glamorous coffee-themed evening, serve up smoothies or host a herbal tea party, that’s up to you. All that matters is that you take part and help us make this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning the biggest ever! For more information visit www.macmillan.org.uk/coffee or call 0845 070 1315. – Yours etc., ELSIE RILEY Fundraising Manager, Macmillan Cancer Support

Welly wear

Sir, – Daybreak weather presenter Kirsty McCabe is forecasting a day of welly-wearing in the name of charity on Friday September 16. The new mum, who recently returned to our screens on ITV’s breakfast show, is supporting children’s charity Action Medical Research and its Wear your Wellies fundraising event. The event is inspired by the charity’s furry fundraising mascot Paddington Bear, who can often be seen sporting his best shiny red wellies. Whether it’s funky festival boots, green gardening ones or trusty winter walkers, it’s really easy to join in with Wear your Wellies day. To run a Wear your Wellies day at your workplace, college or school all you need to do is sign up now, download your free fundraising resources and then ask everyone to wear their favourite boots on Friday 16 September and collect a donation of £2 from each welly wearer. Kirsty says: “With any luck the sun will be shining on the 16th, but knowing the UK’s weather it’ll be wet!” Visit www.wearyourwellies.com to register now and download fundraising materials to support your event. Go on… give it some welly! – Yours etc., CLARE AIREY for Action Medical Research
