Sophie Sweeney, a pupil at Bishopbriggs Academy, is one of 16 players who have been named for the clash against Germany later this month.

The talented youngster, who also plays for Celtic’s under-15 team, was initially invited to a two-day Scotland training camp with 30 other girls.

She advanced to another two-day selection session where she shone – winning a place in the team ahead of girls more than a year older than her.

A delighted Sophie (pictured) said: “I really love playing football and want to play at the highest level possible at my club and internationally.

“From a young age, I have always wanted to play for Scotland and to be picked at 13 makes me really proud of all the hard work I have put in.

“I am buzzing for the first match against Germany.”

Paul Brownlie, head of Celtic Football Club’s Girls’ Academy, passed on his congratulations to Sophie and her proud family.

He said: “I’m delighted Sophie has been named in the 15s national squad. This will be Sophie’s first experience of international football.

“Sophie is a young player who has been playing way above her age band for the last three seasons at Celtic and that’s testament to her character and the ability which she possesses.

“I’m sure the opportunity to play against of one of Europe’s best nations will be a challenge that Sophie will

relish.”

Scotland under-15 girls take on Germany at Toryglen Regional Football Centre on Tuesday, October 30. Kick-off is at 7.30pm.
