Recycling bid aims to curb food waste

The week’s activities, coordinated by Zero Waste Scotland, aim to get people recycling more by raising awareness of its benefits and promoting easy ways to do more.

Neighbourhood services convener Councillor Stewart MacDonald said:“At the moment in East Dunbartonshire we are recycling 50.5 per cent of our waste thanks to the efforts of our residents and businesses.

“The next Scottish Government set target the Council has to meet is 60 per cent recycling by 2020, and we can only achieve that with the continued help and participation of residents.”

He added: “We have some of the highest recycling figures in Scotland, but we can always strive to do better. All the waste we send to landfill costs the counci and council tax payers a lot of money - it’s like putting money in the bin.”

Zero Waste Scotland chief executive Iain Gulland said: “Recycle Week is all about mobilising action and getting as many people across Scotland as possible to recyucle more.

“It is great to see Easy Dunbartonshire Council taking part,and I would encourage local authorities, businesses, community grouips, schools and universities to get involved and sign up for Recycle Week”.

East Dunbartonshire residents have four recycling bins - blue for paper and card only, brownm forcans, glass and plastic, green for garden waste (March to November) and silver caddy for all food waste.
